Autumn/Winter 2016 Nails | Colours and Trends

AW Nails Featured

A new season means new trends. We’ve already covered the must-have hair styles for both men and women, but now it’s time to talk about nails. The AW16 catwalks saw designers pay particular attention to nails; some used them to complement their designs, while others had nails almost as an additional accessory. Read on for the main autumn/winter nail trends for 2016, and find out how to get the professional look at home thanks to OPI.

Metallic finishes often make an appearance in the run-up to Christmas, but this year they’re going intergalactic. Vivienne Westwood opted for navy with finely milled glitter at Paris Fashion Week (above left), while Opening Ceremony (above right) got creative with metallic droplets in New York. To achieve this cosmic look at home, choose a deep blue or black shade and apply a glitter polish such as OPI’s Comet In the Sky over the top. Alternatively, a foil polish such as Unfrost My Heart will give unrivalled shine and a slick, contemporary finish.

Sophisticated and timeless, designers including Saint Laurent and Kate Spade (above) proved that red nails are still a staple trend for autumn/winter. Start now with a bright orange-toned red such as OPI’s Cajun Shrimp and then transition into party season with the vampier Got the Blues For Red. The blue undertones in this lacquer add a burgundy blend that looks super-luxe thanks to the glossy finish.

It’s not just about colour this season – one of the most popular trends for the fashion week runways was for heavily embellished, three-dimensional nails. Libertine broke the mould at NYFW with striking fur nails (above left), while designers such as Angelo Marani opted for edgy stones on statement fingers (above right).

AW16 Nails Dark Tips

Dark Tips
Rather than full black coverage as we’ve seen in previous seasons, this autumn, darker colours are kept to the ends of the nails. Apply a classic black shade such as OPI Lady in Black along the tips of your nails for simple, minimalist style as seen as Cushni et Ochs (above left). For a bolder look, mimic tanya Taylor’s nails at NYFW (above right) by using black alongside a berry red for an ombre effect.
