BAFTAs 2019: The Best Red-Carpet Hairstyles You Need To See
If you’re in need of some seasonal hair and beauty inspiration, look no further than the show-stopping attendees at this year’s BAFTAs. An impressive roster of celebrities flocked to the opulent Royal Albert Hall in London to honour the best films of the year, and naturally, the red carpet was teeming full of gorgeous looks. We’ve picked out a few of our favourite looks from the evening, with top tips on how to recreate these elegant hairstyles for yourself.
It’s no secret that the fabulous Lily Collins is all about the statement brow and thanks to beauty guru Lisa Eldridge her BAFTAs look was no different. It was no surprise then that she opted to pull back her hair into a slick bun, paired with a strikingly on-trend centre parting so that all eyes were firmly on her seasoned brows and voluptuous deep red lips. Slicked back looks like this are perfect when teamed with high neck outfits or dresses where you want to draw attention to the neckline or a low back.
Get the look: Part hair in the middle (ensuring it’s dead straight) and comb your hair back into a little pony – don’t stop combing until you’re sure you’ve straightened out every bump! Spray a little System Professional CC Chrono Control Hairspray to ensure your part stays put whilst you twist and secure your hair into a low bun.
Works best with: Second day hair. Unlike freshly washed hair, the added level of sebum oils in your roots will make for easier taming.
There seems to be something undeniably alluring when you team red hair with glamorous Hollywood waves. Perhaps it’s a mix of sensuality akin to Jessica Rabbit and the association of the glitz ‘n’ glamour with ‘Hollywood’ waves… Whichever it is, Barbara Meier has nailed her red-carpet look.
The fashion model and actress wowed in a shimmering sequined gown, but it was her glossy copper locks that caught our attention. Barbara’s been known for her red, Rapunzel-esque hair ever since she won Germany’s Next Top Model, and we loved her simple yet elegant BAFTAs look.
Get the look: Firstly, make sure you protect your coloured hair with a good shampoo like Sebastian’s Color Ignite Multi Shampoo. Style your locks using the ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong to get those beautiful soft waves. Flip your hair over one shoulder (opposite side to your parting) to achieve that true red-carpet glam.
Works best with: Medium to long hair that you can rest over one shoulder, although you can secure shorter hair to the side using bobby pins too if you’re really vying for this look!
American actress Linda Cardellini brought her fairy tale story to the red carpet wearing Paolo Sebastian’s Fall 2018 Couture dress. We couldn’t help but make the resemblance to Carrie Bradshaw’s famous tutu (cue her gorgeous Instagram shot in the screen grab below). But it certainly didn’t take long before we turned our attention to her beautiful, bouncy blow dry. Collar-bone grazing hair is still going to have its moment in 2019 so why not update your look like Linda’s and opt for a golden balayage to go with your medium-length ‘do?
Get the look: For a truly glamorous blow dry, we’d recommend booking in for a blow dry service at your local Regis Salon, letting the experts take care of this for you whilst you sit back and relax. If you’re in a hurry and we don’t have any last minute availability (book in next time!) your best bet is to turn to your trusted ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand. Perfect for creating enviable volume and natural-looking curls, simply wrap small sections around the wand and gently brush out to get those elegant, soft waves.
Works best with: Freshly washed hair for added volume and oomph – pop your head down and blow dry your hair downwards for the ultimate root boost.
Mary J. Blige
When Mary J. Blige first graced our screens, we fell in love with her edgy, urban essence and rich, soulful sound. But let’s not forget that Queen Mary. J was also known for her sassy, blond hairstyles, too – a trademark trait we were pleased to see was still on full display at this year’s BAFTAs.
The queen of R’n’B dressed to impress with a white and gold fitted power suit complete with a delicate train to match for some added glam vibes. Sassily co-ordinated with her outfit, her golden locks were styled into beautiful curls – full of bounce yet soft in texture – emphasising power and femininity in equal measure.
Get the look: If you fancy recreating the ‘No More Drama’ hitmaker’s curls, be sure to invest in a ghd Curve Classic Curl tong. Get gorgeous, smaller sized curls for classic style and volume. Remember to curl away from your face to begin with and then alternate the direction of each curl so that they look natural and don’t end up intertwining with each other.
Works best with: Heat spray like Matrix Total Results Mega Sleek Iron Smoother will be your best friend for a tightly curled look like this – protect, protect, protect! We also recommend stocking up on Kerastase’s Discipline Fluidissme Spray to ensure your strands are well looked after. This look is great for short to medium length hair that will sit on the shoulders or above once curled.
No stranger to making a dazzling entrance on the red carpet, Laura stunned in a glitzy semi-sheer gown. Endeavouring to tick off as many glamour check boxes as possible, the star wore her blonde locks in elegant loose waves, clipped back with glitzy decorative hair accessories.
The emphasis here is smooth locks that look glossy and healthy. Embellished accessories are also a good choice if you want to create a look that’s got that touch of sparkle.
Get the look: For the ultimate on-trend glam look, you’ll need to centre part your hair and have your trusted ghd Smooth & Finish Serum to hand. Once you’ve created your soft waves, back comb the crown of your hair for a little lift and polish the look with some Designline Shine Mist High Gloss Spray. Avoid leaving flyaways on display and use a strong hold hairspray like TIGI’s Maxxed Out Massive Hold Spray to keep these at bay. Make sure your hair is pinned behind your ears before you add your decorative accessories.
Works best with: Most short hair lengths, but particularly well with longer hair. If you can’t decide between having your hair up and out of your face or down, but still want to look and feel glamorous, this is the look for you.
Just short of picking up jaws as she walked along the red carpet, Cate left us speechless as she graced our screens with brunette hair. That’s right, brunette hair! We think she looks incredible with her new colour. Usually known for her sleek blonde locks, (check out the throwback Instagram post 😱) the Australian actress clearly thought it was time for a change and opted for this beautiful chocolate hue. Of course, Cate’s so gorgeous she can probably pull off any hair colour going. Jealous, us?
Get the look: If you’re looking to wow friends at your next social event with a brand-new hair colour, we’d recommend opting for a simple hairstyle like Cate’s, so that all eyes are firmly on your new debut. Pop into salon for your brand-new hair colour and let our experts reveal all their styling secrets… Just remember to leave your hair styled down like Cate’s if you want the focus to be on your new colour.
Works best with: If you in the mood to show off your new hair colour or statement piece of jewellery or outfit, a simple hairstyle like Cate’s at the BAFTAs will do the trick. Just make sure you leave your hair down and that it’s looking glossy and shiny to add to your radiant look.
