Royal Style Through the Years
This jam-packed long weekend doesn’t just promise Easter fun and extra nights out for the 9-5ers out there, it also marks the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II today. During her incredible reign she’s seen a lot, and remained an icon of British elegance throughout. Of course, when we talk modern royals we can’t help thinking about their style and fashion influence, so we’re here to round up some of our choices of the most stylish ladies from one of the most famous families in the world.
At the turn of the 1950s, Queen Elizabeth II was still Princess Elizabeth, much admired for her beauty, elegance and style. A far cry from today’s modern royals, she attended official events in lavish gowns and royal jewellery, and always with her chic 50s pincurled hairstyle. Not just perfect to accompany a crown, the style that our Queen made her signature around her coronation takes its roots from the height of style and elegance in the 1950s, and provides inspiration for retro lovers to this day.
One of the most undeniable icons of royalty was Diana, Princess of Wales, who’s beauty and eye for fashion helped elevate her to worldwide celebrity. Start with a grand wedding in 1981 that gripped the nation, Diana epitomised the 1980s for many. Pairing her perennial chic short blonde with fashionable suits and understated jewellery, she made the Royals look firmly up to date and stole the hearts of the nation.
Of course, no royal round up would be complete without Duchess Catherine, perhaps the most stylish of them all. When Kate Middleton married Prince William in April of 2011 it had us all glued, with Kate looking every inch the fairytale princess. Her youthful style has once again reinvented the Royal image, and her glossy brunette locks have a fan club all their own! While we’ve heard rumours that she’s been urged to chop her long hair to look more demure, we’re hoping that Kate keeps her style looking every bit as envious in the years to come.
