Style Watch: BAFTAs 2017

Awards season is in full swing, and this weekend it was time for Hollywood’s stars to cross the pond for a very British red carpet. The 70th annual BAFTAs delivered on its usual promise of glitz and glamour, and we’ve rounded up our favourite beauty and fashion from the night.

The red carpet is often the place you expect to see bold makeup and extravagant hairstyles; this year, though, a lot of stars opted to keep all of the focus on their gorgeous gowns. With embellishment and embroidery aplenty, hair and makeup was often kept understated – perfectly aligned with this season’s trend for naturality. While no two looks are ever the same at the BAFTAs, there was a strong trend for sleek, straight hairstyles with deep side partings. Perfectly groomed waves were also replaced with textured, more casual styling that in some cases had a second-day feel to it. But who takes our award for the best style of the night? Read on to find out…

Thandie Newton

In a sophisticated but simple floor-length Osman gown, British actress Thandie Newton could easily have had one of the more forgettable ensembles on the red carpet. However, the look became a real head-turner thanks to strong, vampy makeup and a slightly undone texture to the hair. If you’re looking to add edge to an otherwise elegant outfit too, we recommend rough-drying the lengths of your hair and then adding a few spritzes of label.m Create Sea Salt Spray.

Taylor Hill

In stark contrast to Thandie, model Taylor went for an incredibly polished and feminine look in a stunning ivory gown by Alexander Wang. Glamorous eye makeup and a petal-pink lip accentuated her beautiful features, while her hair was kept off her face in a super-glossy, sleek low ponytail.

Penelope Cruz

Once known for her voluminous long locks, Penelope Cruz has kept her look fresh and contemporary with a chic long bob. With relaxed styling and a peekaboo fringe, the actress’ facial features are framed perfectly while still ensuring that all eyes are kept on her dazzling Versace gown. A brown smoky eye is a softer alternative to black, and we love Penelope’s pairing of the warm tones with a glossy nude lip.

Emma Stone

This awards season has arguably been dominated by Emma Stone and the runaway success that has been La La Land. It’s little surprise then, that the 28-year-old actress has taken progressively bolder steps with her personal style at each show, and we’re head over heels for this quirky ensemble. The embellished Chanel Couture plunge dress layered over the coordinated trousers was our favourite outfit of the night, and we love the understated hair and makeup. As always, her copper locks looked healthy and vibrant – fellow redheads can keep their colour glossy with Redken’s Colour Extend Magnetics Shampoo.
