Style Watch: Met Gala 2017
Known as “fashion’s biggest night out”, the annual Met Gala is always an evening of unadulterated glamour and head-turning style. In homage to designer Rei Kawakubo, this year’s avant-garde theme meant that attendees had the opportunity to showcase bolder looks than ever before. While some embraced the theme wholeheartedly, other celebrities arguably went more subversive in relatively plain ensembles. There were stunning looks from both ends of the spectrum, but who were our style winners from the event?
With fresh, minimal makeup, Zoe Kravtiz ensured all eyes were on her ultra-feminine Oscar de la Renta gown. In this season’s must-have shade of ‘millennial pink’, the dress’ contrasting black applique detailing gave it a strong catwalk edge. The 28-year-old actress is usually known for her braids, but the Met Gala saw her sporting a platinum blonde pixie cut that showcases her stunning bone structure.
While we’re used to seeing J-Lo in figure-hugging outfits, the singer proved she can turn just as many heads when dressed conservatively in pale blue Valentino. The 60s-inspired gown was complimented by a similarly retro high ponytail, with loose waves adding a touch of relaxed glamour to the style.
Although not one of the boldest ensembles on the red carpet, Selena Gomez looked the epitome of elegance in a delicately embellished Coach maxi dress. A bold, magenta eyeshadow and chained Tiffany’s choker stopped the outfit from appearing too safe, but it’s her ultra-glossy graduated bob that really catches our attention. Clever colour placement helps the singer’s hair to look thick and healthy – speak to your local Regis stylist about our hair contouring services for the same effect.
She may only be 19, but Kylie is already a red carpet veteran and used to hitting the headlines with her risque fashion choices. Her Met Gala outfit didn’t disappoint anyone expecting a bold look from the reality star, as she stepped out in a heavily-embellished nude gown by Donatella Versace. Known for her extensive collection of bold wigs, the youngest Jenner opted for a simpler style with a chin-skimming peroxide blonde bob. Pretty nude makeup finished off her polished look.
One of the most talked-about looks of the evening was supermodel Cara’s futuristic, metallic ensemble. From her bejewelled, painted and shaved head to her heavily embellished trouser suit, the look was avant-garde from head to toe. In her typical androgynous style, Ms Delevingne played with the masculine silhouette of the tailored suit by adding a waist-cinching belt and towering heels.
