Men’s Grooming: Hair care and styling tips according to the experts

Seb Man model

If you haven’t read the title, let’s make it clear now – this one is for all the men out there looking for the best of the best when it comes to men’s hair care and styling. We take men’s grooming very seriously here at #RegisHQ (plus we’re ALL for simple hair routines that mean you’ll be in and out the bathroom before you know it) which is why we recommend salon quality products when it comes to maintenance and styling.

We all think we know what’s best for our hair and scalp (and the majority of the time we do) but as we grow older so does our hair and skin, meaning our grooming regimes need to be adapted to suit. It’s this part of our grooming regime that we often forget, and we know that for most men, the less complicated the routine, the better. By just upgrading the products you have in your bathroom cupboard and adjusting your self-care habits, you’ll be well on your way to having healthier looking hair. And thanks to our stylists’ top tips it’s now even easier to pick out the products that are right for your hair type – in fact, we’ve detailed everything you need to know about upgrading your grooming regime below, with top picks and shop links available at your fingertips. It couldn’t be easier than that now, could it?

1. Avoid over-washing your hair

Our stylists advise to avoid washing your hair everyday. If you wash your hair every day, stop, just stop! It might seem a bit gross to not wash your hair everyday when you regularly use styling products and want to cleanse your hair and scalp daily, but trust us the more often you wash your hair, the more you’re stripping your hair and scalp of essential oils. The sebaceous glands in your scalp produce sebum oil which is essential for protecting your scalp as well as travelling down the hair shaft to protect each hair strand from the elements and oxidative damage.

Instead, our stylists recommend washing your hair no more than 2-3 times a week. If you suffer with greasy hair most mornings, try switching your shampoo to a cleansing shampoo to really help with digging out some of that product and oil build up when it does come round to wash day. We also recommend investing in a dry shampoo (or borrow hers when she’s not looking – but don’t tell her we told you that) as it’ll help extend the time you can go between washes by refreshing your scalp and adding a bit of oomph to dry and lank locks.

Stylist picks:

Label. M Dry Shampoo

This one’ll prove to be a great companion inbetween hair wash days, particularly if your hair is on the thinner side and needs a little extra pick me up when grease starts to set in. Once it’s lifted the residual oils from your hair, it provides a soft, velvety finish.

American Crew Power Cleanser Style Remover

Suitable for all hair types this bad boy shampoo is a power cleanser that gives your hair the deep clean it needs by removing even the toughest of product build up. Leaving your hair feeling extra clean and refreshed, you’ll find it much easier to go without washing your hair for a tleast a couple of days without feeling ick.

2. Use high-quality Shower Products

It can be tempting to rely on the ‘cheap and cheerful’ product options when it comes to keeping your hair clean and nourished, but we assure you that extremely cheap hair products are certainly not ‘cheerful’ – not when your hair’s health is concerned.

You may feel as though your hair is clean and hydrated immediately after your shower, but you’ll be disappointed to learn that it tends to be laced with harsh chemicals which, over time, can cause quite severe damage to hair. By damaging the hair shaft you’re weakening the hair and eventually cutting short it’s life span – meaning it’ll become so brittle and weak that it will snap or fall out. That’s not to say that cheap hair products don’t contain any good ingredients, but when compared to salon -products they only contain very small amounts of them.

The thought of using high-quality, salon professional products might make you eye-roll now but believe us when we say your hair will thank you for it. Salon quality shampoos and conditioners contain hair-loving ingredients, which unlike cheaper alternatives, repair, clean and hydrate your hair from the inside. You may feel as though a cheaper product does the job if your hair feels soft after use, but the reality is that it also leaves behind a waxy build-up and doesn’t actually hydrate from within – which is no good for your hair long-term.

Our stylists also told us that with salon-quality products, you won’t need to use as much either, so your bottle will last much longer – a big bonus in our opin.

3. Less (product) is more

When it comes to hair styling products, our stylists are firm believers of ‘less is more’. All those times your gf said your hair gel was a bit overkill? Well, she was kind of right. If you use too much product your hair can quickly start looking greasy, messy and a bit lank rather than the clean looking and effortless style you were hoping for. When styling your hair, start with much less product and build it up – but too much – as you go on. Lapping on more than you need is a nightmare to remove unless you stick your head under the shower again, so take heed of our advice and don’t apply so much. If you find that you’re not achieving the style you want by using less product, you probably need to switch to a product where you’re able to use less and achieve more. We’re listed some of our most popular salon picks, rated by guys who most probably have suffered similar hair woes to you, so definitely check them out:

Popular picks:

Redken Brews Men’s Hairspray

The perfect anecdote to over-styling, this hairspray is lightweight, flake resistant and suitable for all hair types. Styling your hair using less product will be a ‘brews’ as you’ll get to secure your final look with this strong hold hairspray. So if you’re after a spray that guarantees hold and gives a natural finish with a light shine, this is the spray for you.

Baxter Of California Cream Pomade

Another light-weight styling option is the new Baxter Of California Cream Pomade, perfect if you want to maintain a bit of movement in your styles. A little bit goes a long way too: if you’re after a subtle sheen to your finished look apply when your hair is damp. For a matte finish, make sure your hair is completely dry before you apply. Capable of providing a dual-finish *and* lightweight – this one’s a win-win.

4. Don’t Rub your hair

It can be tempting to aggressively rub your sopping wet hair dry with a towel, especially when you’re in a rush. But, hair is far weaker and prone to breakage when wet so we recommend avoiding this drying technique at all costs if you want to prevent hair thinning and damage. Instead, our stylists recommend patting it dry with a towel, and for those with slightly long hair, try gently squeezing your sections of strands instead to help your towel absorb the water without damaging hair.

5. Keep Calm

This may come as a surprise to some, but your mood can affect the condition of your hair and state of your scalp. Depending on our stress levels, our roots become less healthy and therefore produce much weaker hair. Over time, this continued stress can cause long-term hair issues like breakage, hair thinning or even hair loss. Prevent this from happening in whatever way you can – take time each day to relax and unwind – it’ll help your mental state too and we are ALL for taking a bit of time out for some much needed zen.

If you find that your hair is thinning however, we recommend Nioxin the range. Offering a new era in the treatment of thinning hair, this range will help you on your way to a fuller head of hair. Complete with a three-part system kit, these nourishing treatments work on the scalp to enhance follicle growth and increase the width of each individual hair strand for thicker, healthier hair.

There are 6 treatments in total:

System 1 – for natural hair that is gradually starting to thin.

System 2 – for natural hair that is thinning fast due to hair loss.

System 3 – for colour treated hair that is gradually thinning due to the chemical damage

System 4 – for colour treated hair that is progressively thinning with hair loss

System 5 – for chemically treated hair that is thinning lightly and gradually

System 6 – for chemically treated hair that is progressively thinning
