The Met Gala’s Best Looks

M

At $25,000 a ticket, the annual New York Met Costume Institute Gala is always guaranteed to deliver show-stopping style. This year’s fundraising affair was no different, as A Listers from across the globe flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in bold, vibrant and some downright daring outfits. As usual, our eyes were glued to the hairstyles, from Beyoncé’s sky-high pony to Amal Clooney’s classic curls. We asked our Creative Director, Kieron Fowles, for a few tips on recreating the evening’s best trends…

“Textured and tousled has been a key trend for a few years now and while it’s still a hot look, I love that we’re starting to see a resurgence of sleek, glossy styles. Super-straight, high-shine styles like Reese Witherspoon’s are so straightforward and add a touch of elegance to any outfit. Begin by prepping damp hair with a straightening balm like TIGI Bed Head Straighten Out, which is activated when it comes into contact with heat helping to create a much smoother result from your blow dry. Follow with a misting of DESIGNLINE Hot Stop Style Primer before running through with straighteners like the ghd Eclipse. Finish with a spritz of Sassoon Professional Spray Shine for the perfect glossy finish.

Elegant ponytails were another favoured style with Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian offering two different takes on this polished style. Kim opted for a classic, demure low ponytail – to make your pony more evening than off-duty day-wear, run a smoothing serum through the lengths and ends (we love Paul Mitchell Super Skinny) and mist over with plenty of shine spray like DESIGNLINE Shine Mist High Glossy Spray.

Beyoncé took her ponytail to a whole new level – literally! To steal her style, work a blow dry gel like Redken Velvet Gelatine through towel-dried tresses before using a large barrel brush to blow dry hair smooth. Gather your hair in a super-high ponytail on the top of your head and secure with a hair tie. Take a curling tong and wrap 3-4 inch sections of your ponytail around it, holding for 6-8 seconds. Only take the tong halfway up the length of your ponytail to create effortlessly elegant curls. Brush through the curls for a softer finish before taking a 1-2 inch section from the bottom of your ponytail and wrapping it around the hair tie, pinning it in place underneath with a bobby pin. Complete the look with a misting of DESIGNLINE Finishing Spray Freeze Spritz.”

Amal Clooney opted for a tumbling mane of glamorous curls. Always guaranteed to turn heads, this is definitely a style to master. Begin by working a styling mousse such as Paul Mitchell Extra Body Sculpting Foam through damp hair before blow drying. Use a specialist wand like the ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand to curl 3-4 inch sections of hair up to the cheekbone. Once all of your hair has been curled, soften the curls into waves by brushing through with a paddle brush and sealing with a spray of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.
