Volume boosting heroes

Big hair always seems to be big news. Thick, voluminous locks as adored by Cheryl Cole, just ooze sophistication and glamour. As much as we know we should, we’re all guilty of reaching for the electrical stylers sans heat protection and with more of us colouring our hair than ever, it’s no wonder so many of us feel like our hair is turning limp and in desperate need of a volume boost.

The good news is there are plenty of products and styling techniques out there to help. From pre and post blow dry products to backcombing and volume-boosting brushes, there are endless tools at your disposal!

Start by going back to basics and investing in a volumising shampoo and conditioner such as Wella SP Volumise Shampoo (£14) and  Volumise Conditioner (£17). Next, apply a root-boosting product to towel-dried hair.

Bradley from The Edge, says:

“One of my absolute favourite root-boosting heroes is Redken’s Rooftul. This is fantastic for adding extra volume to your style without leaving the rest of your hair feeling tacky. Simply spray into the roots before blow drying using a round bristle brush, like the ghd Ceramic Vented Radial Brush (£17.50), to add lift and bounce.”

If you’re looking to achieve a smooth, sleek finish using straighteners, avoid straightening from the root as this can flatten hair. Start an inch or so down the hair shaft and hold the hair at a 90 degree angle from the head as you glide the straighteners slowly through the lengths.

If you still feel in need of more lift, a little backcombing can work wonders but keep it to special occasions as too much can lead to breaking. Begin by separating your hair in 1-2 inch sections around the crown and starting a few centimetres away from the root, using a fine tooth comb gently push the hair down towards to root. Finish with a spritz of holding spray like Designline Hold Everything Spray Workable Shaper (£9.99) to secure the look. Just make sure you brush it through at the end of the day to avoid excessive knotting!”

If you have a special occasion coming up, an in-salon blow dry is ideal for adding extra volume. Pop into your nearest Regis salon to find out more.
