Why Use a Hair Serum?

With so many hair products on the market, from creams and mousses to pomades and balms, it’s easy to get a little lost in what you really need. A lot of people swear by hair serums, but if you’re not entirely sure what they do or why you need them, this post is for you.

Hair Serum: What It Is, What It Does & When to Use It

Serums are silicone-based liquids that coat the surface of your hair. They have numerous benefits, from protecting hair against humidity, eliminating frizz, adding shine and getting rid of tangles. Serums are typically used on towel-dried hair after washing and conditioning, and can be used before blow drying or letting hair dry naturally. 1 or 2 drops of serum are normally all it takes to transform hair from dry and frazzled to smooth and sleek.

Is Hair Serum the Same as Oil?

Because serums can look very similar to hair oils in their appearance and texture, many people assume they do the same job. However, they’re actually completely different products. Oils penetrate the hair cuticle and act as a treatment, whereas serums coat the surface of the hair strand and is only used for styling. Oils can also be used on dry hair for an added dose of moisture and shine, or even as a hair mask; serums, on the other hand, are normally used on damp hair pre-styling. Serums and oils can work together to leave hair softer, shinier and healthier, so we always recommend having one of each on hand.

5 of the Best Hair Serums

So now you know you need a serum, but which one is right for you? At Regis, we stock over 30 hair serums and some are better suited to certain hair types than others. However, whether you’ve got fine, thick or processed hair, there will definitely be one that works for you. Here are some of our favourites…

If you have thick or curly hair then you’ll love the results from Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum. Specifically designed for hair that’s maybe a little more difficult to tame, this formula contains lightweight silicones that will smooth and protect hair without weighing it down.

Ideal for all hair types, the Designline Silk Drops is one of our most affordable serums. As well as leaving hair super glossy, the formula is enriched with a combination of proteins and silk amino acids to also moisturise and nourish your hair.

Keep your coloured hair vibrant with the Pop and Lock serum from Color Wow. Coating each strand in a protective layer that helps to lock in your shade, the product also contains UV filters that prevent colour fading. All serums add gloss to hair, but the added ingredient of Mica in Color Wow gives your locks a mirror-like shine.

ghd stylers are all about versatility, so it’s little surprise that their serum is too. ghd Smooth and Finish can be used before blow drying hair straight for sleek, flawless results, but is also perfect for adding definition and gloss to waves and glamorous curls. As well as being used on damp hair before drying, our stylists also love using this serum on dry hair to finish the look – flyaways are tamed and split ends instantly masked.

If you have thin or fine hair, some serums might feel too heavy. This where teh Nioxin 3D Styling Rejuvenating Elixir comes in – not only is it lightweight enough that you can barely feel it, but the innovative formula also helps to enhances the texture of fine hair. The unique LIGHTPLEX technology adds a deep nourishment to your locks, leaving them feeling smoother than ever before.
