2018 Women’s Hair Trends

For a lot of us, the new year is an opportunity for a new look. Switching up your hairstyle can be the perfect way to start afresh – but which trends should we be asking our stylists for in 2018?

The catwalks for both spring/summer and autumn/winter were awash with avant-garde styling and hair of all colours, lengths and cuts. However, there were a few strong trends that our experts believe are going to be huge in the mainstream this year. Overall, we saw a step away from overly-groomed looks and a transition towards more natural, lived-in styles and colours.

From Emilia Clarke to Selena Gomez, 2017 saw plenty of celebrities hit the bottle and transform their brunette locks to blonde. If you’re tempted to follow suit, it’s worth bearing in mind that 2018’s must-have colour is grown-out, dirty blonde.

For years, platinum and silver shades dominated the trends. This season’s colour is much warmer in tone, with golden lengths and darkened roots. Known as a root drag, this colouring technique not only gives a bohemian, effortless look to the hair, but also makes your entire colour much more low-maintenance. Ask your stylist to make your root colour as close as possible to your natural shade, and you can leave it to grow out for as long as you like.

Braids have been a catwalk favourite for several seasons now, but the super-groomed boxer braids of the last couple of years have had their moment. In keeping with this year’s trend towards the low-maintenance and undone, 2018’s must-have braids are slightly unkempt. Low, loose plaits are a great way to nod to the trend, as are higher schoolgirl-style braided ponytails.

For this look, choose a light-hold hairspray such as EIMI Flexible Finish (£12.90) that will keep your style in place but prevent it from looking too rigid.

With low-maintenance styles proving so popular on the runways, it’s time to ditch the curling tongs and rollers. To achieve that effortless look, in 2018 you want to keep your hair as straight and sleek as possible. Worried that your hair might look a bit flat? Our experts recommend colour contouring, where high- and low-lights are placed throughout the hair. This technique will add body and depth despite the smooth, sleek finish. Not feeling brave enough to go for a new cut or colour? Hair accessories are a quick and affordable way to instantly update your look. In 2018, there are two essential accessories to keep you ahead in the fashion stakes. Firstly, silk hair scarves were seen all over the runways, from  Marc Jacobs to Derek Lam. Tied under the chin, they’re incredibly fashion-forward (and not to mention practical – turns out your granny was right all along!) If you’re not quite ready to embrace the granny-chic look then a sporty fabric headband, as seen at Miu Miu, will also give a nod to the trend.

Secondly, it’s time to throwback to the ’90s and stock up on scrunchies. These fun hair ties look great worn with low, casual ponytails or the messy braids we know you’ll be loving. Opt for plain colours and fabric to keep a chic edge to the look.
