Spring Summer 2017 Hair & Beauty Trends
The eyes of the fashion world might be firmly set on the next season already, but for us mere mortals, it’s finally time to start thinking about spring/summer 2017. While some hair and beauty trends return each spring – tanned skin and pastel nails, anyone? – the SS17 runways also introduced us to some subversive new styles that we can’t wait to try out. As the mornings get lighter and the temperature starts to rise, incorporate
Embellishment was a strong hair trend in 2016, from the quirky rings we saw adorning braids at festivals to the ornate combs and slides that we favoured in AW16. This season, hair accessories are bigger and brighter. Braids are instantly updated with rainbow material, entwined through the length of the plait as at Maison Margiela (below, left). For more formal occasions, metal headbands and crowns are the perfect finishing touch to an on-trend outfit. Team with ornate jewellery as at Elie Saab (below, right) for a statement look.
Colour Pop Eyes
After the minimal ‘no makeup makeup’ trend of autumn/winter, this season sees colour return with a vengeance. A strong 1980s influence was seen at Jean Paul Gaultier (below), where a wash of vibrant orange was taken all the way up to the browbone. Bright lids were also seen at Max Mara (feature image), with rich reds and blues applied in a deliberately haphazard way beyond the outer corners.
Once reserved exclusively for the Christmas party season, metallic has been embraced as one of the key nail trends for this season. As seen on runways including Guo Pei (below), gold and silver metallic nails add an eye-catching detail to any look. For a super-luxe chrome finish, visit your local salon for a professional, high-shine manicure.
Braids were such a dominant trend last summer that it’s little surprise to see them re-ermege for SS17. However, to ensure the style is contemporary for this season, leave behind the chunky French braids and loose fishtails. Instead, opt for micro-braids in otherwise sleek styles, or follow in the footsteps of Christian Dior’s SS17 runway show (below) and incorporate cornrow braids into buns.
Highlighting and strobing products have been some of the most popular makeup items of the last couple of years, and the anti-matte skin revolution continues. This summer, however, the focus in on an all-over luminosity that has a ‘lit from within’ glow. Illuminating primers such as Crystal Clear’s Illuminate are the ideal way to achieve this look – use underneath or in place of your usual foundation for a fresh, healthy-looking base.
Lending itself perfectly to the natural bohemian vibe of spring/summer, the ‘hun’ – or half-bun – is set to be the style of festival season. Team with tousled, lived-in texture for an effortlessly cool finish.
