The Oscars Red Carpet 2014

The absolute pinnacle of every year’s exciting awards season, last night saw the brightest stars gather for the 2014 Oscars. Fashion and beauty took a front seat right next to the awards themselves, with everyone glued to the red carpet to see our what our celebrity style favourites would be wearing. They didn’t let us down, showcasing new trends and classic looks side by side at the 86th Academy Awards.

Girl of the moment and fashion press darling Lupita Nyong’o was probably the most anticipated arrival of the night, and she wowed the crowds in a custom pale blue Prada gown. Matching her super-short crop to the ensemble, the Supporting Actress winner added a little sprinkling of princess style thanks to a gold headband. Shahnaz from The Edge was a definite fan, saying “I love how Lupita matched her statement dress with such simply hair and makeup, the simplicity definitely proved that sometimes less is more. She looked stunning!” Her headband accessory had the fashion pack buzzing, so we’re anticipating plenty of copycat styles to make an impact soon!

Another of our stand-out favourites, Jennifer Lawrence joined the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Portia de Rossi and Naomi Watts in what we think was the hair trend of the evening – swept-back dos. While Naomi went for straight and sleek, it was Jennifer’s texture that made her style shine. Switching up her pixie to be truly versatile, and high impact for the occasion, the high volume and loosely textured sweep let her face take centre stage for this beauty look. This style has taken a while to move from the catwalks to the red carpet, but it’s set to be the hottest thing in occasion hair for the season to come.

Pregnancy glow might be something of a clichéd phrase, but it’s one we can’t resist when it comes to how stunning Olivia Wilde and Kerry Washington looked last night. Both making formal maternity style look easy, they opted for very different takes. We really loved Olivia’s look, pairing a beautifully fitted black gown with a chic gathered updo.

As ever in recent years, there was no shortage of classic styles on show, with Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett sporting the retro Hollywood waves that are a perennial favourite. Channelle from The Edge is a lover of these vintage looks: “Simple elegance means the biggest stars never go wrong on the red carpet. Stars like Cate Blanchett and Julie Delpy were among my favourites for their classic, timeless looks that really suit the occasion.” However, it was Kate Hudson who really sparkled in the throwback hair style, pairing a 40s inspired gown with the sort of bombshell blonde waves that would make Veronica Lake proud.

It wouldn’t be an Oscars 2014 roundup without making special mention of Jared Leto, who’s hair has captivated everyone from fashion lovers to the celebs themselves this awards season. Wearing messy waves worn down, his stylist pulled off the absolute best feat – making sleekly blowdried ombre look on trend and totally masculine. We might be coveting his colour for ourselves, but that doesn’t mean Jared isn’t making it his own, and putting colour firmly on the map for men – just where it belongs!
